Gladiator meets Game of Thrones: a royal woman becomes a skilled warrior to destroy her murderous cousin, avenge her family, and save her kingdom in this first entry in a dazzling fantasy epic from the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Elemental Assassin series—an enthralling tale that combines magic, murder, intrigue, adventure, and a hint of romance. In a realm where one’s magical power determines one’s worth, Lady Everleigh’s lack of obvious ability relegates her to the shadows of the royal court of Bellona, a kingdom steeped in gladiator tradition. Seventeenth in line for the throne, Evie is nothing more than a ceremonial fixture, overlooked and mostly forgotten. But dark forces are at work inside the palace. When her cousin Vasilia, the crown princess, assassinates her mother the queen and takes the throne by force, Evie is also attacked, along with the rest of the royal family. Luckily for Evie, her secret immunity to magic helps her escape the massacre.Forced into hiding to survive, she falls in with a gladiator troupe. Though they use their talents to entertain and amuse the masses, the gladiators are actually highly trained warriors skilled in the art of war, especially Lucas Sullivan, a powerful magier with secrets of his own. Uncertain of her future—or if she even has one—Evie begins training with the troupe until she can decide her next move. But as the bloodthirsty Vasilia exerts her power, pushing Bellona to the brink of war, Evie’s fate becomes clear: she must become a fearsome gladiator herself . . . and kill the queen.

"<strong>I didn’t finish so I’m giving 3 stars</strong><br/><br/>Normally I have to finish a book but I just couldn’t bring myself to finish this one. Since I didn’t finish it I didn’t feel right giving it a 1 or 2 star rating so 3 is my compromise. I had a hard time reading the story so I decided to give it up instead of struggling. The main character was supposed to be 28 years old but seemed more like 16. The story was boring and predictable with a few exciting scenes here and there. It was like one of those deceive shows where they zoom in on the clue when it’s left behind so you know it’s there then it’s later revealed as a clue. This constant need to explain things to the reader irritated me. For a moment I thought I could get through it once the fighting started but then things calmed down and the need to over explain and hint at every little “this will be important” thing came back and I was done. Maybe someone else might enjoy this but I didn’t."

"I’ve always liked books with court intrigue, and things that involve taking over whichever evil royal is currently on the throne. Unfortunately I feel like this book is either really barely three stars or got just a little over it. Had it been a little more developed in terms of world building, characters, and plot, I think it could’ve been really good. That being said it wasn’t all too bad. I just didn’t feel particularly attached to the story or any character.<br/><br/>Onto the next!"
"I ve always been looking for a perfect royal book. I thought Cruel Prince was one, but when I read Kill the Queen… it is totally a new level of angst. I can’t believe that I say it but I really could associate myself with Eivy, her thoughts and actions were LOGICAL, as if I was the Queen. Mostly I hate main characters in books I read and it is the main reason why I tend to not finish books. This reached the status 100%! Let’s see what is coming, but today I m totally satisfied with my book choic"
