Maire is a baker with an extraordinary gift: she can infuse her treats with emotions and abilities, which are then passed on to those who eat them. She doesn't know why she can do this and remembers nothing of who she is or where she came from. When marauders raid her town, Maire is captured and sold to the eccentric Allemas, who enslaves her and demands that she produce sinister confections, including a witch's gingerbread cottage, a living cookie boy, and size-altering cakes. During her captivity, Maire is visited by Fyel, a ghostly being who is reluctant to reveal his connection to her. The more often they meet, the more her memories return, and she begins to piece together who and what she really is--as well as past mistakes that yield cosmic consequences. From the author of The Paper Magician series comes a haunting and otherworldly tale of folly and consequence, forgiveness and redemption.

"<strong>Layers</strong><br/><br/>At first I wasn’t sure, but the more I read, the more I followed along trying to solve the puzzle of the story. I was not expecting to find that Allemas was who he was or that their punishment would end up being more like a reward, but that’s part of all the layers to the story that made it so good. It ended up causing me to think of it being a Frankenstein retelling and at the same time a lot of other stories and things all in one. It was a deep thinking and feeling book for me, which was part of what I loved. <br/><br/>If you haven’t checked it out, you should."
"I can't help but love Charlie Holmberg. I first read the Paper Magician series and loooved it. I finally got around to read Magic Bitter Magic Sweet. It was so beautiful. Every bit kept me on the edge trying to guess what would happen next. You feel the confusion and distress of each character within yourself. I am so happy I took the time to read Magic Bitter Magic Sweet. It truly touched me."
