"Lanyon, as usual, has crafted an engaging story that had me glued to the page from start to finish.
As they said in the Author's Note at the end, this story ended up asking more questions than answering: generally a big no-no for mystery novels. As they also said, this is much more in line with fantasy novels. Unfortunately, this story is not written like a fantasy novel. It is still very much written in the style of a mystery novel. Even as an Urban Fantasy, I would have preferred that the mystery be even partially wrapped up at the end of this one. That being said, it certainly succeeded in making me want to continue the series.
The characters, as always, are unique and have individual interests and traits that help differentiate them from other Lanyon characters, despite sharing a lot of similar themes in the relationship. I liked both Cosmo and John, and I like them for each other. The timeline was a little wonky, but that was addressed several times, so I can't complain too much.
TL; DR: Good characters, good story, wish they'd wrapped it up more tidily at the end, because it felt a little unfinished considering the genre and style. Coming back for more with #2."
