This steampunk series debut set in the same world as the New York Times bestselling Parasol Protectorate is filled with all the saucy adventure and droll humor that Gail Carriger's legions of fans have come to adore. Fourteen-year-old Sophronia is a great trial to her poor mother. Sophronia is more interested in dismantling clocks and climbing trees than in proper manners—and the family can only hope that company never sees her atrocious curtsy. Mrs. Temminnick is desperate for her daughter to become a proper lady. So she enrolls Sophronia in Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality. But Sophronia soon realizes the school is not quite what her mother might have hoped. At Mademoiselle Geraldine's, young ladies learn to finish...everything. Certainly, they learn the fine arts of dance, dress, and etiquette, but they also learn to deal out death, diversion, and espionage—in the politest possible ways, of course. Sophronia and her friends are in for a rousing first year's education.

"Cute. Definitely a great starter book to an interesting series. However, not being a general steam punk reader, I found a lot of terminology hard to follow and the character names were hard to pronounce in my brain... Example Sidheag. Anyway, I won't read the rest of the series, but it was a good set up and an amazing idea for a finishing school"
"Steampunk meets finishing school and espionage. All of the greatest bits of a superb spy movie or nover with a flourish of petticoats and fans. Sophia was not her mothers delight but after being shipped off to finishing school, Sophia gets more then she bargained for from Mademoiselles Geraldine's Finishing School. The girls are not only taught etiquette by a vampire but they are taught fighting skills by a werewolf and their home is an enormous dirigible. This is a great starter novel for those interested in trying a steaming themed novel. Highly recommended."
