"Honestly, based on my love of opera and historical fiction, this should have been my dream book. But as I often find in life, reality does not always meet expectations. The best analogy I can give for this book is describing how I felt when I was finally able to see the famous French opera Faust (which hilariously is featured heavily in this book). I was so excited to see Faust, but by the end of the first hour (because yes, it was THREE HOURS LONG) I was like, hmm, not as blown away as I would like to be by the performances. By the second intermission (yes again, there were MULTIPLE) I was slightly tempted to just leave, but by the end of the show, I was kind of glad I stuck it out. Would I see it again? Probably not. But I was glad I saw it. That is precisely how I felt reading this book. I did ultimately really like it, if only because it is something I would really like. A self-fulfilling prophecy, if you will. Take from this review what you like, because I wouldn’t recommend it but I also wouldn’t not recommend it. Alas, it depends on the reader."
