Mine has been a life of much shame. I can’t even guess myself what it must be to live the life of a human being. Plagued by a maddening anxiety, the terrible disconnect between his own concept of happiness and the joy of the rest of the world, Yozo Oba plays the clown in his dissolute life, holding up a mask for those around him as he spirals ever downward, locked arm-in-arm with death. Osamu Dazai’s immortal—and supposedly autobiographical—work of Japanese literature, is perfectly adapted here into a manga by Junji Ito. The imagery wrenches open the text of the novel one line at a time to sublimate Yozo’s mental landscape into something even more delicate and grotesque. This is the ultimate in art by Ito, proof that nothing can surpass the terror of the human psyche. -- VIZ Media

"This is based on Osama Dazai's novel which is alleged to be a true story. This is the longest work by Junji Ito I've read thus far. I thought the plot was very compelling even though the main character was a very unlikable person. My issues are that there was a lot of nudity when there hasn't been any nudity in any of Ito's work I've read previously. I don't seek books with a ton of sexual content out because it is triggering for me. I also thought it was very strange that the early events in his childhood, mainly *Spoiler* sexual abuse from both a male and female servant in his household was explained away in the first person narration as when women became obsessed with him and then never really touched on again. I enjoyed it but I had to skip or skim a lot because there was SO MUCH nudity and it didn't even seem like it was to drive the plot forward."
"Tries to be meta or deep but just not the vibe. Not really that creepy just sad-ish? Don't care for the main lead and his pitty party. Worse ways to be "no longer human" one example is the foreign film "Come and See" which REALLY gets the point across (another very dark bit of media) . Maybe the novel is better??? "
"It was so beautiful and disturbing at the same time"

"Major trigger warnings in this book! But if you can stomach it, it's one of my favorite Junji Ito stories. Horrifying. So memorable because you'll absolutely hate the protagonist. Or at least I did. But at the very beginning, and sorta at the very end, you feel a bit sorry for him. But only a smidge. "
